Academic Planning and Approval

The academic planning process at UTSW requires formal approval for changes such as the creation of new academic programs, modifications to existing academic programs, creation of cooperative agreements with other institutions, changes to instructional modality, etc. The process of implementing academic changes can be lengthy. In the case of doctoral degrees, the minimum time horizon from inception to implementation is two years. Failure to secure appropriate approvals for academic changes can have significant consequences with regulatory agencies and accreditors. So, it is imperative to plan carefully and actively communicate well in advance of anticipated changes.

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Accreditation, and Assessment serves as a central resource, providing expertise and process management in the approval of academic changes. The office provides guidance on institutional obligations to the UT System, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), SACSCOC, and other key stakeholders.
