Dual-Site Method

Our 6-week psychiatry clerkship broadens your view of psychiatry through exposure to multiple settings. You will rotate through two different clinical locations selected to allow for a wide-ranging learning experience; for example:

  • Site 1 = Parkland Inpatient Unit
  • Site 2 = UTSW Geriatric Outpatient Clinic

Our clerkship embeds other opportunities for students to develop competency in core psychiatric skills; for example: short call in the psychiatric emergency room, the use of electroconvulsive therapy, and an optional afternoon in the outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry clinic.

Our didactic series utilizes a combination of lecture, team-based learning, reflection, and cutting-edge clinical scenarios in UTSW’s state-of-the-art simulation center.

More Opportunities

Our very highly regarded Brain and Behavior course is a foundational experience for all medical students, regardless of planned specialty, and is an inspiration for many who are now applying for psychiatry residency training.

From completing our clerkship and coursework, you will develop relationships with our attendings and residents -- personal and professional resources for you -- who are eager to answer your questions and direct you to other helpful people.

Dr. Brenner welcomes the opportunity to meet with students and organizes an MS4 luncheon each fall to overview psychiatric careers and residency training. To make sure you are on our invitation list to share your interest in psychiatry, psychiatry.education@utsouthwestern.edu in August.

Our medical center also emphasizes developing research skills, with special opportunities like the Medical Scientist Training Program.
