Women's Mental Health Fellowship

Women are disproportionately affected by common psychiatric conditions (e.g., major depressive, anxiety, eating, and trauma-related disorders). The reproductive events in a woman’s life add complexity to psychiatric disorders, especially to standard treatment options. Tragically, mental health disorders are one of the leading causes of perinatal death in Texas and the U.S.

Upon graduating from our fellowship, you will have in-depth knowledge of women’s mental health with a focus on perinatal psychiatry. You will be highly skilled in treating women throughout the reproductive life stages, including in the nuances of eating disorders and trauma treatments, and equipped to be a leader in women’s mental health and advocate for Texas women.

  • Program Overview

With support from Parkland Health and the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC) and accreditation by the Texas Medical Board, our fellowship is a 1-year, funded, clinical specialty training program for psychiatry residency graduates.

  • Educational Approach

Our fellows gain expertise in treating perinatal psychiatric disorders, trauma-related disorders, substance use disorders, and eating disorders as they relate to women’s mental health, by:

    • Rotating at various clinical sites, including community clinics, faculty practices, and a hospital consult service
    • Gaining case consultation experience through supervised time on the Perinatal Psychiatry Access Network hotline with faculty
    • Working with patients from a wide range of demographic and diagnostic categories
    • Participating in multidisciplinary teams that include obstetrics/gynecology and addiction specialists
    • Formal learning in weekly didactics with faculty specializing in women’s mental health
    • Teaching medical students and psychiatry residents
    • Completing a scholarly project on a women’s mental health topic, submitting it for an opportunity to present at a professional conference

Fellows are further supported in their specific interests within research, psychotherapy, and/or academic projects.

  • Training Approach

Clinical rotations are 4 months for outpatient settings and 1 month for inpatient settings.

Fellows treat peripartum patients 1 day a week for 1 year as their continuity clinic.

Didactics are half a day a week and focus on perinatal psychiatry and trauma and eating disorders.
