Once You Arrive

Check In

  • International Postdocs: Schedule an appointment to check in with the International Affairs Office. They will send directions and a list of required documents at that time.
  • U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: Go to the Human Resources Office in the Pickens Medical Education & Conference Center (NG), Suite NG3.111, near the cafeteria on North Campus, to complete your I-9 documents within three days of your start date.
  • After completing the check-in and hiring process, you will receive an email invitation for the next available New Employee Orientation. You will also be invited to our next monthly New Postdoc Information Session.

Take Important Next Steps

  • Get a UT Southwestern ID badge, typically issued during New Employee Orientation.
  • Enroll in insurance and retirement plans. You will receive information about benefit options during New Employee Orientation.
  • Set up your UT Southwestern email. You will receive information on how to log in during the New Employee Orientation.
  • Attend the New Postdoc Information Session, where you learn about our certificate program, your pay and benefits, and the many resources available.
  • Make sure you understand your tax situation.
  • International postdocs must obtain a Social Security number.
  • Remember to take care of your physical and emotional health, too. You’ve been through a lot of changes in the last few weeks!

Coordinate With Others

Faculty Mentor

Meet with your faculty mentor to begin developing your postdoctoral research and training plan. Top priorities may include:

  • Understanding your mentor’s expectations and your own responsibilities.
  • Finding out how your PI will measure success and how you will work together to set short- and long-term goals.
  • Discussing how you will communicate with your mentor, including preferences, patterns, and frequency.

Lab Manager

Meet with your lab manager or administrator to get practical tips, such as how to order supplies.
