Curriculum

The Prosthetics-Orthotics Residency Program takes a structured, comprehensive approach to advanced prosthetics and orthotics training and gives you the opportunity to master all of the required competencies identified by the National Commission of Orthotic and Prosthetic Education.

You'll gain patient care experience in multiple practice settings. This clinical exposure will give you the technical, clinical, and research experience you need to become a competent practitioner in your chosen discipline. You'll participate in case presentation discussions and present your clinical cases to faculty and students. You'll also have the opportunity to attend various clinics with UT Southwestern faculty members in several disciplines, including foot and ankle, problem foot, trauma, amputee, and pediatric comprehensive orthopaedic oncology. We also offer additional lectures, rounds, and other opportunities for formal medical education. Download our catalog.

Progress is at a pace that accommodates all participants. The supervisor-to-resident ratio is never more than 1:2 as your supervisor evaluates your ability to assume increasing responsibility for patient care. Throughout the year, your supervisor will provide frequent reviews, including a final evaluation of your performance for NCOPE.

Experience Sites

To enhance your knowledge and strengthen your skills, you'll work with diverse patients in a variety of care settings.

UT Southwestern Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic

We see prosthetic and orthotic outpatients daily by appointment in our clinic in the School of Health Professions Building. As a resident, you'll see a wide variety of patient conditions among a primarily adult caseload. The Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic will serve as home base for your patient-care activities at other sites on campus. You'll have your own assigned workspace in the clinic lab – and because it's shared by the Residency Program's entire technical and professional staff, you'll enjoy a rich environment for collaboration, problem-solving, and consultation.
