Residency Program Structure

The Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Training Program includes extensive training in craniomaxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, pre-prosthetic surgery/dental implantology, temporomandibular joint surgery, cosmetic maxillofacial surgery, cleft and craniofacial surgery, maxillofacial oncology and reconstructive surgery, dentoalveolar, and other surgery as it pertains to the specialty.

An extremely busy inpatient service and outpatient clinic are maintained in each hospital. The programs are designed to thoroughly familiarize trainees in the clinical management of oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.

Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Rotations

Biomedical sciences are incorporated into the residency experience by rotations on other services. Rotations on general and trauma surgery, anesthesiology, internal medicine, otorhinolaryngology, and other surgical electives provide the resident with an extensive background in the management of a variety of medical and/or surgical problems.

Conferences

Weekly conferences are held on Wednesday evening for the entire oral and maxillofacial surgery service. Formal lectures in oral pathology are given on a monthly basis and an OMS Journal Club is held monthly to discuss articles of interest. Treatment planning conferences in dento-facial deformities and dental implantology are also held on a scheduled basis.

At the conclusion of three years of medical school, there is a one-year general surgery internship that will provide additional experience and fulfill the requirements of licensure in those states requiring one post-graduate year of medical residency. The remainder of the program will fulfill the requirement for advanced education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as required by the American Dental Association, which includes at least 30 months of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery experience.

Residents receive stipends while they are in medical school when they are on rotation in OMS (approximately 10 to 11 months total), Anesthesia (one month), and ENT (one month). Residents also receive stipends for their entire PGY1 year of surgery, and the final two years of OMS. Each resident is eligible for in-state tuition during medical school. Medical school tuition must be paid by the student for three years.
