Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship

Each year, the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial needs additional help in our clinical rotation. We accept individuals for a one-year commitment from a pool of individuals who do not match or are interested in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery OMS) but who have not yet applied to an OMS training program. Individuals selected for the clinical positions function as first-year residents but are not given any guarantee of entering our program the following year. They are paid the same stipend as a first-year resident.

For those interested, please download, complete and send the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship/Internship Application with your National Board Scores, CV, letter(s) of recommendation, and National Board of Medical Examinees Comprehensive Basic Science Examination to Thomas Schlieve, D.D.S., M.D. Interns are typically selected immediately after the match, so if you do not match with an OMS training program, contact Dr. Schlieve or Anita Olmedo immediately to see if we have any one-year internships available.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has an Extern program that is based out of Parkland Health & Hospital System. The experience — starting on a Monday and ending on a Friday — is open to dental students in the third or fourth year of a U.S. or Canadian dental school who are interested in an intense experience in clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Externs function alongside interns and residents by working in the clinic daily, making rounds, attending all conferences and seminars, and occasionally observing in the operating room. Externs are supervised and spend long hours at the hospital.

Housing is not available for externs. Prospective students may request a list of suitable housing accommodations in the area, if necessary.

Applying

Applications must be received by April 1 for those wishing to attend during May, June, July, and August. Selections are made shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, we cannot offer an externship to each applicant as we are limited to four externs at a time.

For the months that have much less competition for externships, applications do not have to be completed by April 1. If you are unsure of the dates you would like to come, please call.

Interested dental students should download, complete, and send the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship/Internship Application with a photocopy of Part 1 of National Dental Board Scores, current academic record, National Board of Medical Examinees Comprehensive Basic Science Examination and letter(s) of recommendation to Thomas Schlieve, D.D.S., M.D.

We are not able to provide housing or malpractice insurance for the externs. If accepted, you must show proof of malpractice insurance prior to your arrival for the externship.
