Why UT Southwestern
Approved by the Texas Medical Board, our one-year program encompasses primary clinical responsibilities at Parkland Memorial Hospital, UT Southwestern University Hospitals, and their clinical outpatient facilities. Fellows receive training in a collegial environment with the program goal of creating independent subspecialty consultants who will be leaders in the field.
Program Mission
The mission of the Emergency Radiology Fellowship program is to provide outstanding educational opportunities to trainees through innovative teaching, clinical training, and exposure to research and quality initiatives to develop excellent radiologists for either independent practices or academic medicine.
Program Aims
The Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program aims to provide fellows with:
- Excellent case-based and didactic conferences as educational tools in addition to day-to-day workstation teaching
- Participation in multidisciplinary teams in order to develop relationships with referring clinicians and enhance impact on patient care
- Communication skills for the 21st century, enabling graduates to deliver complex medical information to patients and providers with clarity, accuracy, timeliness, and compassion

Program Highlights
- Trained by a dedicated group of Emergency/Acute Care Radiologists
- Advanced training provided in all modalities including Body and Neuro CT, Body and Neuro MR, Ultrasound, X-rays as well as dedicated elective time
- Fellowship training is provided by 11 full-time Cardiothoracic Imaging faculty

- A diverse patient population and range of disease processes in the hospital inpatient and emergency departments
- High-volume and variety of cases in the abdominal, neuro, chest, some cardiac CTA and MSK section: >21,000 CT (including advanced imaging for acute care such as CT enterography, CT angiography, spectral CT, and CT neuro diffusion imaging, CTA head and neck imaging), > 5000 MRI (assessment for appendicitis in pregnant women or pancreatic injury, pelvic vein thrombosis > 25,000 Ultrasound (including advanced vascular US, contrast-enhanced US, and elastography) annually
- Stroke classification imaging
- Dedicated fellow lectures on emergency/urgent radiology imaging topics as well as regularly scheduled radiology grand rounds presented by prestigious visiting and local professors
- Participation in multiple interdisciplinary conferences, journal clubs, case conferences
- Variety of opportunities for research/scholarly activity with dedicated academic time
Beyond the Clinical Experience
In addition to clinical activities, fellows are trained in leadership. Fellows are responsible for planning, monitoring, and interpreting examinations, assisting in resident education and training, consulting with referring clinicians, and participating in research

- Pay is commensurate with PGY level
Rotation Blocks
- Rotations will predominantly be during the 3pm-12am emergency shift at the level 1 trauma hospital with 1-2 months of rotational emergency radiology training at the tertiary hospital
- Elective rotations – up to 1 block; offered during traditional day shifts (~7:30 am-5pm):

Call Responsibilities
No calls are required in this fellowship
Facilities and Equipment
- Two large hospital systems including Parkland Health and Hospital System Acute Care Hospital, the Dallas County public hospital and a level 1 trauma center; Clements University Hospital, the university teaching hospital, transplant center, with affiliated NCI-designated cancer center; and multiple associated imaging centers

Research Opportunities
Emergency Radiology research interests are in line with the core values of the Department of Radiology, namely intellectual vibrancy, and technological innovation. Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects or initiate new projects under the supervision of Emergency Radiology faculty.
Salaries and Benefits
Hospital stipends are set annually and are competitive nationally with those of other teaching programs. The amount, shown in the chart below, depends on the year of residency training.
Low-cost hospitalization and dental insurance is available to contracted house staff, as well as a group life insurance plan.
Medical malpractice insurance is provided for Radiology house staff by the Department through the University of Texas System group plan.
The Fellow’s assignments and vacation usage will be determined and/or approved by the Program Director. Fellows accrue vacation and sick leave on a monthly basis and may utilize such leaves consistent with State law and the Policies and Procedures adopted by UTSW to implement the State law.

Eligibility
UT Southwestern will consider applicants matriculated in an ACGME-accredited diagnostic radiology residency or an RCPSC-accredited or CFPC-accredited residency program in Canada. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who completed a radiology residency program are also welcomed to apply.

Application Process
The program provides up to two one-year fellowship positions annually. We are currently accepting applications for academic year 2025–2026 and will be accepting applications for 2026–2027 in the fall.
