Departmental Distinction
Our department offers residents the opportunity to receive a certificate of distinction in an area of interest within the scope of family medicine. This distinction recognizes a resident who has gone above and beyond their residency requirements to obtain a depth of academic and clinical study in a specific subject or clinical demographic. Residents who are interested in a specific post-residency career (hospital medicine, urgent care) or plan to enter a fellowship are highly encouraged to complete a departmental distinction in that area.
The minimum requirements to achieve a departmental distinction are:
- Utilize three elective months in one specified area of interest.
- Submit Competency based Goals and Objectives for each elective month, which must be approved by the Resident’s Advisor and Program Director.
- Present a Departmental Grand Rounds in the same area of interest, with a critical appraisal of literature review in the chosen area.
- Complete their required Research and Scholarly Activity in the same area of interest, producing a product suitable for presentation or publication at the local/ state/national level.

- Community Medicine
- Geriatrics
- Global Health
- HIV Medicine
