Message from the Program Director
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center! We are excited to highlight the world-class training available in our Heart Center. We pride ourselves on training the next generation of outstanding pediatric cardiologists, researchers, educators, and careers in clinical and academic pediatric cardiology.
We provide excellent clinical training. Children's Medical Center Dallas has 616 beds, including a 30-bed pediatric cardiac intensive care unit and a 22-bed acute care cardiology unit. Our fellows have numerous learning opportunities! Our center performs over 500 cardiac surgeries, 700 catheterizations, 150 electrophysiology studies, 20 heart transplants, 15 ventricular assist device placements, 13,000 echocardiograms, TEEs, and fetal echocardiograms, 600 cardiac CTs, and 1000 cardiac MRIs each year. We have 3 cardiac operating rooms and 3 hybrid catheterization suites.
Our program is proud to host a team of truly wonderful individuals who are genuinely passionate about their work. It is compassion and dedication that makes it possible to meet the challenges faced in this specialty, and it is their good nature and camaraderie that make our program an enjoyable place to train. Our fellows are one of the greatest assets of our program, bringing lots of new energy, perspectives, and questions.
Educational opportunities are tailored to suit the needs and interest of each fellow. Over the course of three years, our fellows progress from beginner to advanced with the appropriate amount of supervision. Each fellowship year has different service and on call responsibilities, building on the fellow’s education and experience. Fellows gain responsibilities as they learn, developing the necessary foundation first. This approach fosters the skill to perform procedures and care for patients at the highest level of precision and independence. The didactic educational program covers the breadth of general and subspecialty pediatric cardiology with multiple, weekly conferences for fellows. We also offer a broad range of research opportunities from the basic sciences to clinical trials.
It is our top priority at UT Southwestern to foster the development of exceptional, well-rounded pediatric cardiologists who are outstanding clinicians and colleagues, have a passion for research and education, and value equity and collaboration. I am hopeful that as you peruse our website, you will strongly consider applying to our program! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
