Admissions Requirements

You’re looking for an educational environment that will challenge and motivate you. To meet your expectations and satisfy accreditation requirements, we ask our applicants to be exceptionally well prepared.

Below is a list of prerequisite courses you will need to complete with a grade of “C” or higher before starting our program. Courses must have been taken within the last eight years.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses will be considered as long as the course title and credit hours are listed on your college/university transcript and are equivalent to the prerequisite requirements. You may be asked to provide a course description for the admissions committee to determine if the course will be accepted. 

  • Biology with Lab (for science majors) – 4 semester credit hours

    UT Southwestern requires eight hours of biology-related coursework. This may vary from other institutions on OPCAS. Examples of acceptable courses include:

    General Biology

    Human Biology

    Microbiology, and

    Molecular Biology

    Please note that Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Genetics courses are usually 3 hours and will require a lab.

    Applications are reviewed individually; however, Exercise Physiology, Ecology, Evolution, and Plant-based biology courses generally do not fulfill the Biology requirements for UTSW.     All required science classes must be for science majors and include a laboratory component.

    Competitive applicants will have completed additional credit hours

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology with Lab (for science majors) – 8 semester credit hours

    Acceptable combonations of courses include:

    4 hours of Anatomy + 4 hours of Physiology or 4 hours of A&P l + 4 hours of A&P ll

    Courses must be Human A&P. Zoology courses will not be accepted.

    All required science classes must be for science majors and include a laboratory component.

  • Physics with Lab (for science majors) – 8 semester credit hours

    Physics courses can be either algebra or calculus based. College Physics and University Physics are both accepted.

    All required science classes must be for science majors and include a laboratory component.

  • Chemistry – 4 semester credit hours

    All required science classes must be for science majors and include a laboratory component.

  • College Algebra or higher – 3 semester credit hours

    We will accept any math class above College Algebra as well.

  • Statistics – 3 semester credit hours
     
  • Psychology – 3 semester credit hours

    Introduction to Psychology or General Psychology is often a prerequisite to these upper-level courses. Please refer to your university’s catalog to confirm if you will need to take one of these courses.

    Must be human growth and development or abnormal.
