WISMAC has sponsored receptions and symposia on a variety of topics. Since 2004, these events have primarily focused on career development.
Annual Fall Faculty Reception
October 2024
The 2024 Fall Faculty Reception will be held in the A.W. Harris Faculty Club on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m, hosted by The Women in Science and Medicine and Advisory Committe (WISMAC) and the Associate Dean of Women's Careers, Helen Yin PhD. This year’s event is entitled, “Growing into Leadership”. The goal of this program is to showcase the amazing female leadership we have at UT Southwestern and inspire our emerging leaders at the institution by sharing the many different paths toward leadership.
October 2023
The 2023 Fall Faculty Reception was held in the A.W. Harris Faculty Club on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. The Women in Science and Medicine and Advisory Committe (WISMAC) in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Women's Careers, invited Gabriela Martinez, PhD, to run an interactive lecture called Thrive Through Personal Purpose. Dr. Martinez provided skills to our faculty on how to identify their values and ways to connect them to their work. Following the talks, we had a panelist discussion including faculty within our institution who has successfully found ways to connect their intrinstic and extrinsic motivations.
Dr. Martinez is apart of the Anxiety/Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Program at the Ascension Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital.
October 2022
The 2022 Fall Faculty Reception was held in the A.W. Harris Faculty Club on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022 from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. The Women in Science and Medicine and Advisory Committe (WISMAC) in collaboration with the Office of Women's Careers, invited Jennifer Haythornthwaite, Ph.D., to run an interactive lecture called High Impact Mentoring: Feedback Feeds Forward. In this interactive lecture faculty learned how to strengthen their mentoring relationships and engage mentees in identifying ways to be more effective.
October 2021
The 2021 Fall Female Faculty Reception will be held virtually on Thursday, October 21 from 5- 6:30 p.m. The topic is: Impact of the Pandemic on our Daily Lives: Insights from UTSW Faculty
During this virtual webinar we had featured speakers Dr. Susan Matulevicius, M.D., and Kala Bailey, M.D., discussed resources offered by the Office of Faculty Wellness, UT Southwestern, and tools on how to deal with stressful situations.

During the current unprecedented and unsettling time, our UT Southwestern leaders and faculty have risen to the challenge to lead UT Southwestern through the crisis. Please join us for the Annual Fall Faculty Women Reception that features a panel discussion by senior and junior faculty.

The 2019 Fall Female Faculty Reception was held in the A.W. Harris Faculty Club and Alumni Center on Tuesday, October 1, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The topic is: Innovation t♀ Market: You Can Do It! - Increase the Impact of Women on Healthcare Innovation.
W.P. Andrew Lee, M.D., EVP for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean, Helen Yin, Ph.D., Assoc. Dean, Office of Women’s Careers, Marc Nivet, Ed.D., Executive VP for Institutional Advancement and Claire Aldridge, Assoc. VP of Commercialization & Business will provide opening remarks. This will be followed by a panel discussion by faculty entrepreneurs.

The 2018 Fall Female Faculty Reception was held in the A.W. Harris Faculty Club and Alumni Center on Thursday, October 25, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The topic covered the Salary Equity Committee’s findings from their UT Southwestern Salary Compensation Survey led by Sharon Reimold, M.D., Internal Medicine Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and Faculty Development. The reception also included an interactive discussion to exercise negotiation tactics to improve your equity.

The fall reception for Women in Science and Medicine was held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center. The theme of the reception was "Building Career Success: The Importance of Sponsorship." Helen Yin, Ph.D.\, Associate Dean for the Office of Women’s Careers, provided an introduction on what sponsorship is and why it is so important for men to sponsor women. Carole Mendelson, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, Obstetrics & Gynecology and the co-chair of WISMAC, acted as moderator to our panel discussion. Our panelists included: Daniel K. Podolsky, M.D., Michael Brown, M.D., Deborah Diercks, M.D., and Sharon Reimold, M.D.
October 2016
The fall reception for Women in Science and Medicine was held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center. The theme of the reception was "Walking the Tightrope of Executive Presence." Suzanne Farmer, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President of Organizational Development and Training and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry facilitated the discussion around what executive presence is, ways to define it, and ways to enhance your executive presence. This reception also included small group discussions around these topics where attendees learned and shared with one another.

The fall reception for Women in Science and Medicine was held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center. The theme of the reception was "Empowerment through Negotiation." Natalie Lundsteen, Ph.D., Director of Graduate Career Development and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, was our keynote speaker and provided her insights to negotiation and moderated the panelist discussion. Our panel included: Helen Hobbs, M.D., Celette Sugg Skinner, Ph.D., Julio Perez-Fontan, M.D., and W. Lee Kraus, Ph.D.
October 2014
The fall reception for Women in Science and Medicine was held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center. The theme of the reception was “Why Mentoring Matters.” Helen Yin, Ph.D., Associate Dean for the Office of Women’s Careers, provided a presentation entitled “Why Mentoring Matters.” Keynote speaker Kathleen Gibson, President and CEO of the Southwestern Medical Foundation, provided her insights on mentoring in the corporate world. The reception also included two speed mentoring sessions, which allowed clinicians and basic scientists to ask selected faculty “mentors” various questions associated with the mentoring process.
October 2013
A reception for female faculty was held at the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center on South Campus. Nina G. Vaca, founder and CEO of Pinnacle Technical Resources, was the featured speaker for this event co-sponsored by WISMAC and the Office of Women's Careers.
STARS and WISMAC
In March 2014, WISMAC joined Science Teacher Access to Resources at Southwestern (STARS) for a daylong Saturday presentation of information and workshops on careers in science and medicine. The audience consisted of junior and high school teachers along with their selected female students. Student representatives of WISMAC took the lead roles in this annual event.
