Women in Science and Medicine
Advisory Committee

About Us

The Women in Science and Medicine Advisory Committee (WISMAC) promotes, supports, and advocates for the advancement of women scientists and physicians, as well as to facilitate the careers and lives of all women on campus. We aim to create a collegial and supportive environment where we can address unique challenges faced by women in academic medicine and science, including issues related to equity, mentorship, work-life integration, and leadership opportunities. We strive to cultivate a culture where women feel empowered to reach their full potential personally and professionally. Our overall goal is to provide inspiration and guidance to the next generation of women in science and medicine.

WISMAC Initiatives

  • Career Development

WISMAC collaborates with the Office of  Women's Careers to celebrate and uplift UTSW physicians and scientists, as well as connecting and empowering them as they build their careers.

We also help advance the careers of rising scientists and physicians by connecting them with opportunities, resources, and information.

WISMAC taps the creativity and enthusiasm in our community to address problems, craft solutions, and relay critical information.

  • Nursing Mother's Facilities

WISMAC provides a wealth of information on fertility, pregnancy and lactation support and links to multiple resources including FMLA and parental leave. UTSW offers primary child care and child education options as well as back-up child, adult, and senior care to all full-time (40 hours a week) and part time (30-39 hours a week) benefits-eligible employees.

  • Menstrual Hygiene Products

WISMAC medical student representatives launched the first free menstrual hygiene product (MHP) initiative, making it one of the first medical school-led programs of its kind in Texas. This initiative ensures that all students across the UTSW Dallas campus have access to free MHPs.

  • Travel Awards

Every year WISMAC provides travel awards to two graduate students, postdoctoral trainees or clinical fellow to attend scientific meetings.
