Pharmacy Intern Program
Program Description and Goals
The UT Southwestern Medical Center Pharmacy Department is excited to announce the UTSW Acute Care Pharmacy Intern Program (PIP). The PIP will serve as an opportunity to enhance pharmacy students’ knowledge and skills in a variety of operational experiences including IV sterile compounding, central pharmacy operations, medication reconciliation, medication counseling, pharmacokinetics and more.
Interns will rotate through experiences, broadening their clinical capabilities as they progress throughout the program. They will have opportunities to work on projects with the goal of presenting at a local/national meeting.
Program Structure
Semester Structure
P2 Summer/Fall/Spring
- Orientation
- Acute care intern: carousel loading, unit dose preparation, Pyxis management, non-sterile compounding, etc.
P3 Summer/Fall/Spring*
- Sterile product preparation, narcotic medication management
- Rotate through other trained responsibilities
P4*
- Emergency Department Transitions of Care: medication history collection, discharge counseling, dose adjustments, high risk medication review
*Can rotate through previously trained responsibilities.
Work Schedule
P2 and P3 Interns: average ~40 hours a month
- 1-2 weeknights/week (4-hour shifts)
- Every 3rd weekend (2 x 8-hour shifts)
- 1 major and 1 minor holiday (8-hour shifts)
P4 Interns: average ~20 hours a month
- Every 4th (2 x 8 hour shifts)
Program Projects
- Journal club presentation P2 year
- Patient/disease state presentation P3 year
- 1 longitudinal project through P2 and P3 with poster presentation at local/national meeting P4 year
Mentorship
Interns will be connected with a pharmacist within their area of interest. Interns will meet with their pharmacist mentor at least once a quarter. During these sessions, the intern will be provided with professional and career guidance in preparation for graduation and life after pharmacy school. The mentor will also provide feedback on job and project performance.
Available Positions
We are currently recruiting four (4) students completing their first year of pharmacy school.
Applying to the Program
Requirements
- Enrolled at an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a Pharm. D. degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale or 77.5 on a 100-point scale
- Licensed as a Texas Pharmacy-Intern prior to start enrollment into the intern program
- 30-minute formal interview

- Application must include a letter of intent, CV, and current transcript
- Must submit 1 letter of recommendation (cannot be written by family members), emailed to Anthony Giazzon and Brandyn Wilcox (see emails above)
- Application deadline of March 1, 2025
- Interviews will take place in March and April
