This year marks the first of a new lecture series for the general surgery residency program. In response to the changing field of medical education, the Department of Surgery implemented a professional development lecture series designed to give residents the opportunity to expand their knowledge base beyond the technical skills needed to become a leader in the field of surgery.

In August, the Rev. John O’Neal (pictured, right), discussed coping with the death of a patient, as well as how to address the emotional toll that patient care can often take on a surgeon.

This year’s lectures included topics such as effective communication, professionalism, self-care and awareness, wellness, and dealing with stress. The lecture series was well-received by the residents, and will continue monthly as part of the usual grand rounds lecture schedule
