Meet the Team

Leah Banks, Ph.D.

Director, Graduate Career Development

I began my academic journey with a B.S. in Biology from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. I then pursued my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, concentrating on Biochemistry and Cancer Biology, at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, under the mentorship of Dr. Aramandla Ramesh. Following my doctoral studies, I conducted my postdoctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, where I worked in Dr. Alea Mills' lab. My postdoctoral research focused on epigenetic modifications of CDKN2A and exploring its role in embryonic development.

After completing my postdoctoral training, I decided to pivot my career toward a path that would allow me to combine my passion for science with my commitment to advising students in higher education. This decision brought me to Johns Hopkins University, where I served as the Associate Director of Life Design. In this role, I supported Biomedical Engineering undergraduates by developing career design curricula, creating internship readiness programs, and providing one-on-one career advising. Additionally, I facilitated connections among students, alumni, and industry professionals.

After my time at Johns Hopkins, I became the Director of Graduate Career Development at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical Center. In this role, I am responsible for creating tailored career and professional development programs that meet the needs of UTSW trainees. My offerings also provide opportunities for one-on-one connections with trainees, allowing them to explore various career paths that align with their interests and training in Biomedical Sciences.

Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the Dallas foodie scene, spending time with family and friends, and playing with my fur baby, Coltrane.

Adriana Almodova

Program Coordinator

I’m thrilled to join The Office of Graduate Career Development in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences as the Program Coordinator. While I am not new to the Graduate School, I am excited to step into this role and actively engage with our students, postdocs and GSBS community! In my previous roles with the Graduate School I lead and assisted efforts for our admissions process, including the Admitted Student Weekends, social media management of the Grad School's accounts and developed The Graduate School Newsletter, The Link. My professional career in higher education has been driven by a passion for cultivating connections across various audiences and creating programs that inspire and support the next generation of experts.

My education from Texas Tech University (2018) primarily focused on addiction science and relationship dynamics related to human development. After completing my studies, my career took me on the path of student recruitment, where I enjoyed learning about the intricacies that go into meeting with and guiding prospective students to their best fit educational experiences.

When I’m not working, you can find me enjoying walks with my 3 dogs, spending time in my garden and when I'm able, catching a round of golf with my partner! I credit taking each of these activities as a source of relaxation, fulfillment and staying creative. I genuinely look forward to contributing to our trainees' experience at UT Southwestern!
