Message from the Director
Welcome to the Allergy and Immunology Training Program at UT Southwestern!
Overview
Our training program has been in existence since 1982 and is a strong clinically-oriented program with a diverse patient population. UT Southwestern fellows also participate in research ranging from basic immunology, to translational projects to interventional or observational clinical research. Our mission is to train fellows capable of managing complex allergic and immunologic disorders, whether in private practice or an academic setting. Our pass rate for the ABAI exam has been 100% for over 21 years.
Adult Clinics
There are two primary continuity clinics at Parkland. The Allergy clinic sees a broad range of allergic disorders, the Asthma clinic manages severe asthma patients by referral, and the Immunology clinic manages primary immunodeficiency and other disorders of immune dysregulation. These clinics are staffed by full-time UT Southwestern faculty (David Khan, M.D., and Christian Wysocki, M.D.) and volunteer clinical facuty. Additional clinic experience is gained at the Professional Outpatient Building at UT Southwestern (clinics of David Khan, M.D.) where tertiary and quaternary referrals are seen for a variety of A&I disorders.
Pediatric Clinics
The Food Allergy Center at Children’s Medical Center (led by Drew Bird, M.D. and Christopher Parrish, M.D.) opened in 2010 and is the site for both clinical and research experiences in food allergy. Children’s also hosts a Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies clinic (led by Christian Wysocki, M.D., Ph.D.) where fellows see a wide range of primary immune deficiencies and autoinflammatory disorders. In addition to these centers, general allergy/immunology clinics (led by Jeffrey Chambliss, M.D. and Tim Chow M.D. as well as with volunteer faculty preceptors) provide broad-based training in childhood allergic disease.
Hospitals
Our hospital facilities support a robust consultant service. Over the years, the campus has expanded markedly, with the state of the art William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, which opened in 2014, and the expansion of the Dallas County’s public hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, to its new home in 2015. Children's Health℠ is the only academic health care facility in North Texas dedicated to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18. All hospitals and clinics are conveniently located in one single district and are connected via walkways or elevated shuttles.
Research
As mentioned previously, a solid research experience is essential to our fellowship training. Fellows have been involved with research projects focused on drug allergy, chronic urticaria, food allergy, eosionophilic gastrointestinal disorders, primary immunodeficiency, and neurocognitive disorders and asthma. Our Allergy Divisions collaborate extensively with other divisions and departments on numerous research projects, ensuring that fellows can be involved with several projects. Dallas
The city of Dallas is among the top 10 largest cities in the U.S. Whether you like sports, the arts, fine restaurants, or even the great outdoors, you will find plenty to do in Dallas. Most people find the temperate climate of Dallas appealing as well, and the cost of living is well below that of comparably sized cities. Our two airports also allow nonstop travel to most destinations.
Applying
Applications should be submitted through ERAS. We accept two fellows per year and welcome both internal medicine and pediatric trained residents. In general, we interview a select number of highly qualified candidates and have done well in the Match over the years.
