Sleep and Breathing Disorders Fellowships

The Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is a comprehensive one-year, ACGME-accredited program training fellows in the competencies essential to practice Sleep Medicine. Our diverse patient population, engaged staff, and Sleep Medicine experts from the Departments of Neurology, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Otolaryngology make this multidisciplinary fellowship outstanding.

The Clinical Center for Sleep and Breathing Disorders (CCSBD) at William P. Clements Jr. Hospital, VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS), Parkland Sleep Center (PHHS), and the Children's Health Sleep Disorders Center (SDC) offer the opportunity to treat patients with a wide spectrum of sleep disorders in the ambulatory and in-patient settings.

  • Curriculum & Training

The fellows receive training in evaluating and treating patients with a wide variety of common and rare sleep disorders including:

    • Circadian rhythm disorders
    • Hypersomnias
    • Insomnia
    • Narcolepsy
    • Neuromuscular diseases requiring ventilatory support
    • Parasomnias
    • Restless legs syndrome and sleep-related movement disorders
    • Sleep-related breathing disorders
    • Hypoglossal nerve stimulator device implantation and management
    • Testing modalities; polysomnograms, positive airway pressure titrations, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, out-of-center testing (actigraphy, home sleep apnea tests, oximetry tests, and sleep evaluation through interpretation of smart devices monitoring data)

The fellows have the opportunity to present their research, posters, and oral presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, including the Southern Sleep Society meeting in April, and the Associated Professional Sleep Society meeting in June. Active participation in weekly didactics, monthly journal clubs, case presentations, and case discussions covering a wide spectrum of sleep disorders is a prerequisite to the successful completion of fellowship training. Fellows have dedicated time to learning polysomnogram interpretation under the supervision of expert faculty.

Residents, trainees, and practicing physicians who have presented posters, or oral sessions at a Regional or National Conference, or published sleep-related research are encouraged to apply early and highlight their achievements in their applications for Sleep Medicine Fellowship training at UT Southwestern. Preference will be given to applicants who have presented at a Sleep Conference showing their dedication and interest in the field of Sleep Medicine.

External and internal elective rotations for residents and medical students interested in learning management of sleep disorders can be arranged through our GME office, program coordinator, or program director through email.

  • Stipend and Prerequisites

Salary and compensation commensurate with training experience (for example: after completing a 3-yr residency, your salary will be at a PGY-4 level. And, after completion of a 3-yr residency and 3-yr fellowship, your salary will be at PGY-7 level).

Lab coats, reference books, and materials are provided at the beginning of training. Limited education funds are available for travel to conferences for the presentation of research materials.

Ask us about parental leave, sick leave, and PTO policies as the wellness of our learners is one of our top priorities! These policies are also available through the UT Southwestern faculty/physician wellness and benefits website.

  • Application

Applications are accepted through ERAS in July and August. Applicants must have completed residency training from ACGME-accredited programs in one of the following; Neurology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry.
