  • Education and Travel Expenses

    Residents and fellows are encouraged to attend educational conferences throughout training, and ACGME requires all neurology residents attend at least one conference during residency. Each neurology resident/fellow has up to $500 per academic year in his/her education fund to purchase books and approved equipment or to cover meeting expenses. In addition to this funding, the Department will cover conference and travel expenses for any resident/fellow who is a first-author presenter at a scientific meeting.

  • Vacations / Sick Leave and Family Leave

    Vacations

    Neurology house staff receive three weeks (15 work days) of vacation per year. House staff generally take one or two weeks off at a time, but longer vacation periods can be arranged. Vacation days accrue from year to year.


    Sick Leave and Family Leave

    House staff receive 10 working days of sick leave per year. Sick leave accrues from year to year. Family leave is allowed under the Family Medical Leave Act. Parental leave are supported and arranged on an individual basis.

  • Insurance

    Professional Liability Insurance

    Complete professional liability insurance is provided at no cost to all house staff. Health insurance is provided through the Parkland Employee-Physician Office (EPO) system at substantially underwritten costs. Dental insurance is also available. Long-term disability insurance and a supplemental retirement program are provided through Parkland.


    Group Hospitalization Insurance

    Group hospitalization insurance is provided at a nominal cost to employees with the remainder of the cost paid by DCHD. The house staff officer may enroll a spouse and/or dependents in the group plan at his/her expense.


    Malpractice Insurance

    DCHD does not provide malpractice insurance. However, as a political subdivision of the State of Texas, DCHD can pay claims in accordance with the Texas Tort Claims Act up to $100,000 per individual and $300,000 per occurrence. This applies to situations that occur while in the course and scope of employment, performing only those tasks assigned by authority of officers of DCHD. Coverage includes act of ordinary negligence, but does not include intentional acts (such as assault) or gross negligence.

  • Disability Benefits and Counseling Services

    Disability Benefits

    House staff are covered by the Dallas County Hospital District (DCHD) Long-Term Disability Plan as outlined in the Benefits Manual.


    Counseling Services

    House staff officers may access counseling services through the Employee Assistance Program as outlined in the Benefits Manual. Additionally, counseling and other services are readily available through the Resident Wellness and Counseling Center on campus.

  • Library Access

    The UT Southwestern Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center is located inside the medical school and is one of the finest in the country. It is a modern, fully computerized facility with multimedia capabilities and serves as a resource library in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

  • Perquisites

    The Department provides white coats and a laundry service. Convenient parking is provided for approximately $20 per month. The Department hosts a welcome party, holiday party, resident retreat, and graduation party for house staff and their families.
