Haitao Xu, M.D., M.S.

Seldin Scholar, 2024

What stood out about your research experience at UT Southwestern, and how did it shape your career?

UT Southwestern is an institution with ample research across the board in different subspecialties within internal medicine and in other specialties. My research is in oncology, and UT Southwestern is home to two NCI-SPORE grants that focus on lung and kidney cancer, respectively. This opens the door to opportunities to collaborate with world-class scientists and to learn from their approach to science. Having all these world-class scientists also means opportunities to collaborate with others across the research spectrum (postdocs, clinicians, statisticians, and bioinformaticians).

How did participating in the Seldin Symposium impact your research path?

Participating in the Seldin Symposium is a great opportunity to receive feedback and reassurance about the importance of your projects.

What are your current research interests and goals?

My experience in Seldin and TARDIS solidified my decision to go into academic Medical Oncology and I was fortunate to match into a Medical Oncology fellowship after my experience in the Seldin Symposium.

What advice would you offer current Internal Medicine trainees about pursuing research?

Take your time to find a mentor. Be honest about expectations and have a clear plan to achieve results. If anyone is genuinely interested in exploring academic research more in-depth, I would highly recommend seeking opportunities with either the TARDIS or UT-StARR program.
