Olgert Bardhi, M.D., M.Sc.

Foster Fellow, 2023

What stood out about your research experience at UT Southwestern, and how did it shape your career?

UT Southwestern offers a highly collaborative research environment where support is readily available, whether you’re an experienced researcher or just starting. The investigators I worked with, particularly on the Seldin Symposium project, provided invaluable guidance while allowing me the autonomy to shape my own research questions and direction. Additionally, cross-institutional collaborations strengthened the quality and impact of research.

How did participating in the Seldin Symposium impact your research path?

Being selected as a Foster Fellow validated my efforts and gave me the confidence and skills to refine my research for publication. Participating in the Seldin Symposium reinforced my ability to ask meaningful questions and optimize my work for maximum impact. Additionally, presenting at national conferences provided valuable exposure and preparation for my GI fellowship application.

What are your current research interests and goals?

I aim to pursue a career in Academic Medicine and Research, ensuring protected time for clinical research alongside my clinical responsibilities. My primary interests are twofold: Improving technical GI tools and procedures to enhance clinical outcomes and exploring ways to increase healthcare access and improve outcomes in underserved populations.

What advice would you offer current Internal Medicine trainees about pursuing research?

Don’t be afraid to take on new projects or learn unfamiliar skills. As new residents, fear of failure can prevent us from exploring research opportunities, but with the support available at UT Southwestern—especially within our program—you can successfully pursue any research interest.
