Ezim Ajufo, M.D.

Seldin Scholar, 2018

What stood out about your research experience at UT Southwestern, and how did it shape your career?

  • Fantastic mentors with a breadth of expertise in cardiovascular research
  • Unique access to the Dallas Heart Study cohort
  • My research experience and exposures to the academic environment at UTSW confirmed my broad interest in epidemiology and more specifically, genetic epidemiology

How did participating in the Seldin Symposium impact your research path?

  • Great opportunity to put ideas together and to have the opportunity to present this to the UTSW community both through my poster and later, through an oral presentation
  • Confirmed my interest in pursuing research beyond residency

What are your current research interests and goals?

I am in the last few months of my T32-equivalent protected research time. I will be applying for a K grant in my second year of EP fellowship (1.5 years from now). My current work focuses on harnessing data from genetics and wearables to understand the pathophysiology of cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia phenotypes.

What advice would you offer current Internal Medicine trainees about pursuing research?

Identify a mentor with a track record for publishing with residents and finish whatever you start with them

Additional reflections:

Incredibly encouraged and honored to learn from the incredibly talented perennial symposium team (Dr. Dwight Towler, Bennie and others) as both a Seldin symposium participant and as a Seldin symposium planner as a chief resident
