Application Process

The Department of Internal Medicine offers both categorical (three years) and preliminary (one year) residency training programs. Be sure to indicate on your application which program(s) to which you are applying.

We preferentially review applications from those who signal our program. However, in certain situations, we will also consider applicants who do not signal us.

We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®) offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. For the 2025 ERAS cycle, our program will participate in the supplemental ERAS application. Applicants are required to complete the MyERAS application; participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

Your application must include:

  • Dean's letter of recommendation (Medical Student Performance Letter)
  • Three letters of recommendation:
    • One must be from your Chair (or designee) of the Department of Medicine.
    • At least one other letter should be from an internal medicine faculty member who can assess your clinical skills and abilities.
  • An official medical school transcript, including all grades for required clerkships
  • Your scores on Part 1 and Part 2 (if available) of the United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE).
  • Step 2 CK results are required for onboarding and must be submitted via ERAS by March 1, 2022.
  • Your personal statement
  • Curriculum vitae (ERAS-generated)

Be sure to include anything you would like us to know about your academic achievements, scholastic honors, research experience, publications, occupational history, extracurricular activities, outside interests, family, etc.

Prerequisites

  • Passing the USMLE.
We do not require a minimum score, but applicants should note that the average score of last year’s class of interns was 242.
  • Medical school graduation within the last three years.
In rare cases, we will consider applicants who graduated longer ago.

If you have further questions, please feel free to Resident.Interviews@UTSouthwestern.edu us.

International Applicants

If you are not a United States citizen or Permanent Resident, UT Southwestern will request J-1 visa sponsorship through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). H1B visas are reserved for residents joining PSTP pathway. UT Southwestern does not sponsor H1B visas for categorical residents.

Exceptions will not be required for applicants with asylee or refugee status with appropriate documentation, or those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status with a valid employment authorization document (EAD).

In response to the cancellation of Step 2 Clinical Skills and the development of ECFMG’s new pathways:

  • ECFMG certification will not be required before interviews are offered.

Prerequisites

In addition to the prerequisites listed above, international applicants should note:

  • U.S. clinical experience is valued but not required. We consider exceptional applicants, and we understand that diversity of training and life experience can only enrich our program
  • Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation that are a faithful representation of the applicant. Home-country or other international letters of recommendation (LORs) will be considered equal in value to U.S. LORs.

Virtual Interviews and In-Person Visit Dates

When you spend time with our house staff, you’ll find that their energy and enthusiasm are infectious. Indeed, their passion for medicine, for excellence in clinical care, for promoting social justice, and for contributing to the body of scientific research have historically been our greatest selling points as a program.

We will offer virtual interviews this year, twice-weekly from October to January. The half-day events will include live interviews with faculty, informational sessions, virtual tours, and live interactions with our residents. We will be posting several videos of our program, highlighting our facilities, our rotations and the experience of our residents.

We know that everyone is worried whether virtual interviews will give applicants an authentic taste of our various programs. We are working to create interactive experiences that will genuinely convey our programs. We will be offering three in-person visits for you to see our program. They will take place on Fridays on the following dates: December 13, January 10, and February 7. You will have the chance to see our state-of-the-art facilities, meet the house staff and faculty, and tour Dallas. Your presence or absence from these events will have absolutely no bearing on how you are ranked. It will serve solely to allow you to get a better feel for our program. You will receive more details and instructions to RSVP in our interview correspondence to you!" Please check back frequently for updated information.
