Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

2024-2025 Advanced Endoscopy fellows with Dr. Tarek Sawas (center)

The advanced endoscopy fellowship started in 2006 and includes two trainees per year who have completed a categorical GI fellowship program. The fellow will be trained as both an advanced endoscopist and a pancreatobiliary consultant. The emphasis of the fellowship is to become proficient in all aspects of ERCP and diagnostic and therapeutic EUS.

Fellows also will learn other endoscopic procedures including enteral stents, endoscopic mucosal resection, complex stricture dilation, endoscopy requiring fluoroscopic guidance, complex polypectomy, Barrett’s ablation techniques, fistula closure, device-assisted deep enteroscopy among other procedures. The advanced fellow will lead a biliary consult service and be assisted by other fellows and residents in inpatient consultation and follow-up of patients.

Training is primarily at Parkland Hospital and William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. Fellows will also perform some routine endoscopic procedures throughout the week and may supervise general GI fellows.

The advanced fellow will need to be board eligible/certified and acquire a Texas state license to be able to serve as an Instructor and attending for general GI procedures. The academic mission of the GI Fellowship extends to the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship as well with a requirement for the fellow to complete a clinical research project during the one-year fellowship. The project will be presented at the end of the year in a formal research presentation to the division. Also, the fellow must present the research at a national meeting or complete a manuscript before the end of the fellowship.

This program participates in the ASGE Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship Match.  Our Fellowship Program welcomes applicants with J-1 visas. UT Southwestern does not sponsor H-1B visas for clinical trainees.
