The UT Southwestern Medical Toxicology Fellowship Program is a two-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It is offered in conjunction with the Texas Poison Center Network and Parkland Hospital.

Why Train at UT Southwestern

Outstanding Faculty

Our faculty members bring an immense amount of expertise and experience to the table. Our faculty include:

Fully Funded

According to the American College of Medical Toxicology, 71% of medical toxicology fellowship programs require additional clinical rotations (ED shifts) outside of toxicology to cover their fellow salaries. Our program is one of the 28% of programs that are fully funded and therefore do not require fellows to moonlight to pay for their salaries.

Because of this, our fellows can come from any medical specialty. While most of our fellows have a background in emergency medicine, we have also trained those who are from pediatrics, internal medicine, occupational medicine, and preventive medicine. If a fellow of any background chooses to moonlight during their fellowship, they can keep their earnings.

Program Resources

  • William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital
    large building with windows

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital is a 12-floor, 1.3-million-square-foot, 460-bed facility that opened in December 2014. Clements University Hospital offers the most up-to-date, cutting-edge technology for patient care. In 2020, the hospital opened a third wing and expanded the emergency department.

  • Parkland Memorial Hospital
    large rectangular building with windows

Medical Toxicology fellows are employed by the Parkland Health and Hospital System, which houses Parkland Memorial Hospital, the county hospital for Dallas County and a major tertiary referral center. The Parkland emergency department is the busiest ED in the nation with an annual volume of over 240,000 patients. Because of this, Parkland is a premier, comprehensive teaching hospital.

  • Children’s Medical Center of Dallas
large building with curved roof, sandstone colored walls

Children’s Medical Center Dallas has one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in the nation. As a major referral center, many envenomated and poisoned patients are sent to Children’s for evaluation, making it a vital part of our fellowship.

  • North Texas Poison Center
Building with brown lines, tan stone, and round grates

The North Texas Poison Center, a part of Parkland Hospital, is the home of our service and fellowship. It provides 24/7 care to the public and health care providers. The Poison Center coordinates with the five other centers in the Texas Poison Control Network to optimize toxicology care for over 230,000 calls annually.

Fellows and Medical Toxicology faculty oversee the direction of patient care provided through the Poison Center and teach over 100 rotators annually including:

    • Medical students
    • Pediatric emergency medicine fellows
    • Pharmacy residents
    • Pharm.D. candidates
