English Classes Through UT Southwestern
UT Southwestern's Office of International Affairs offers English classes for non-native speakers (also known as English as a second language, or ESL) free to those who work or study at UT Southwestern. People who are not UT Southwestern faculty, staff, or trainees are not eligible for this service.
Classes change each semester. See the current semester's class schedule (PDF).
Classes include:
Listening/speaking
- Develop your ability to understand what you hear in English.
- Practice speaking and increase your vocabulary.
- Practice your conversational English and build your confidence in talking to native speakers while you learn more about American culture.
Advanced grammar
- Develop a strong understanding of the grammatical structures that are common to American English.
- Learn to apply your knowledge of American English grammar in both written and oral performance.
- Gain essential practice for all covered material through classroom activities and presentations.
Presentation skills
- Practice giving different types of presentations and responding to questions.
- Practice proper stance and delivery of information to different audiences.
Pronunciation and accent reduction
- This course focuses on the pronunciation of American English.
- Topics of study:
- Consonant and vowel sounds of English, stress, rhythm, and intonation
- Patterns of words and phrases; patterns affecting speech such as deletions, insertions, and linking
- Differences between spelling and speech. Students will practice speaking using a variety of techniques to add speech patterns reflective of American English. Students will also learn how to evaluate their own speech to become more competent and self-assured speakers.
English Language Resources for Everyone
Below are some additional English as a second language (ESL) programs that anyone can take advantage of.
- Park Cities Presbyterian Church ESL classes: Park Cities provides morning and evening classes and free child care services during its ESL classes. Preview the textbook ($25). You will need to buy the textbook, but classes are free.
- Dallas Public Library: Visit its website for class schedule and registration information.
- Aspire: Aspire welcomes adult students (age 18 or older) of all backgrounds to master written and spoken English through its ESL program. Ranging from beginning to advanced, courses are taught by dedicated volunteer instructors and designed to work with each student’s skill level and schedule. You will need to pay $40 for materials each semester.
