Core LIMS

Core LIMS Overview

Core LIMS is a web-based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for managing data associated with pre-clinical drug discovery research. The LIMS allows efficient capture and retrieval of information regarding many aspects of experimental research such as samples, protocols, assays, experimental parameters, and data generated by the experiments. It also enables users to manage sample inventories and research-related workflows.

The Core LIMS system is sponsored by the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Biochemistry. UT Southwestern Medical Center's High-Throughput Screening Core supports the system, and Academic Information Systems hosts the Core LIMS.

Core LIMS Access and Pricing

Access to Core LIMS requires a specialized account. Using a user account model, the system allows for laboratories to purchase user accounts on a yearly basis. A LIMS account is required if you are running a chemical screen with the High Throughput Screening (HTS) Core. The cost of your user account will cover your access to the LIMS and the support the LIMS administrators provide to your screening project (e.g. uploading your data, creating customized reports for you, helping you with training and LIMS configurations, etc.). If you are conducting follow-up studies on a small molecule therapeutics project, you can also purchase an account. The latter will give you access to the compounds you’re making and/or studying, data from the HTS Core, and results from your lab and others that are supporting your project. A single user account costs $1,500 per year. You can pay for your account via the HTS Core’s iLabs site.

A standard user account provides you with access to your project and its associated data and small molecules. Once you’ve purchased a user account, a LIMS administrator will meet with you to discuss your project and any additional requirements you may have. The administrator will also set up a username and password for you. If you are collaborating with another principal investigator and need access to their project, you will need to secure written permission for access from your collaborator. This can be as simple as your collaborator sending an e-mail requesting your access to the UTSW Service Desk.

To request an account, please contact Dr. Bruce Posner, Director of the UT Southwestern High Throughput Screening Core.

Core LIMS Training

Core LIMS training is accessible online once you have a user account. You can access it simply by selecting “Documentation” from the Help menu in the upper right-hand corner of the application window. If you require additional assistance, please contact the UTSW Service Desk and request support from a LIMS Administrator. Users may also request a training session by emailing the UTSW Service Desk by calling 214-648-7600.

FAQs

How much does it cost to get a LIMS account? Does it have additional cost to access existing or new projects?

It costs $1,500 a year to get a LIMS account and access existing projects (given granted permissions). Additional cost may apply to set up new projects.

Can I access LIMS outside the UT Southwestern campus?

Yes. UT Southwestern users requesting access for outside users should contact AIS for additional information. Please note that you must use VPN to access Core LIMS outside of Parkland, Children's, or MyUTSW, UT Southwestern's intranet.

Where can I get a "Core LIMS Account"?

To get a Core LIMS account, you will need to make a request on the iLabs page of the UT Southwestern High Throughput Screening Core Facility.

What if I forget my account name and password?

Check the email you received when you registered, or call UTSW Service Desk at 214-648-7600.

How do I get trained for the LIMS?

You should take advantage of the online help offered in the LIMS. You can access it simply by selecting “Documentation” from the Help menu in the upper right-hand corner of the application window. Users may also request a training session by emailing the UTSW Service Desk or by calling 214-648-7600.

What should I do if I come across any problems on using the LIMS?

Call the UTSW Service Desk at 214-648-7600 or by email to report any problems. The system administrators will help you on the first-come, first-served basis.

How much time will it take to set up my new project in the LIMS?

The amount of time needed to add a new project into the LIMS will vary. After an initial consultation concerning the specifications you outlined in the New Project Request form, a Core LIMS administrator should be able to provide a rough estimate of the time involved.
