Scholarships at UT Southwestern

Scholarships are awarded to assist in the funding of a student’s education, generally with no expectation of being repaid. Most funds received may be utilized for all school-related expenses, including (but not limited to) tuition, fees, other associated direct education costs, room and board, and transportation and personal expenses.

All scholarships must first pay charges due to UT Southwestern. Any remaining funds will be credited to the student via direct deposit (if configured).

Entering Students

UT Southwestern has robust scholarship programs for students. Scholarships are awarded to entering students based on merit, financial need, or both. Some programs require additional applications to be considered. Contact your program for more information.

Continuing/ Current Students

Certain scholarships are awarded to continuing students. Eligible students will be notified by email when these opportunities are available.

External/ Private Scholarships

External (also known as private) scholarships are awarded to students outside of UT Southwestern Medical Center. A majority of external scholarships will have an application process, may include demographic requirements and often require an essay component regarding a topic of interest to the donor. Some scholarships are awarded on the basis of membership to a specific community group, religious affiliation or privately held company – typically with a standard application available only to those within such an entity.

How to report an outside scholarship to our office (and why you should) 

External scholarships are considered “other financial assistance.” Students must report any external scholarships to Financial Aid financialaid@utsouthwestern.edu as they may have an impact on the student’s other financial aid, which cannot exceed their total cost of attendance for the academic year.  Our office will make any necessary adjustments to accommodate the external scholarship by reducing a loan before any other financial aid. It is always beneficial to reduce student debt when possible.

Where can external scholarship checks be mailed? 

Scholarship entities can mail checks directly to our office at the address below. It’s important to include our 4-digit mail code!

Please send any ACH request form to Financial Aid financialaid@utsouthwestern.edu so it can be reviewed and completed by the UTSW Cash Management department.

Are scholarships taxable? 

According to the IRS, scholarship funds received in excess of qualified tuition expenses are considered taxable income. The Internal Revenue Service defines qualified education expenses as tuition and fees required to enroll at or attend an eligible educational institution, and course-related expenses such as fees, books, supplies, and equipment that are required for the courses of instruction and that are required of all students.

UT Southwestern does not normally provide a 1098-T or other tax form to scholarship recipients, but this does not mean scholarships are not taxable. Recipients should refer to IRS Topic 421, the Interactive Tax Assistant for scholarships, the Help page at irs.gov, or consult a tax professional.
