Be alert for fraudulent DEA calls

Several UTSW physicians have received calls from purported Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) officers asking for provider DEA registration numbers in regard to fraud investigations. This scam has been around for at least two to three years, as documented in this DEA posting.

DEA personnel will never contact practitioners or members of the public by telephone to demand money or any other form of payment, nor request any personal or sensitive information over the phone. Notification of a legitimate investigation or legal action is made via official letter or in person.

If you receive a call from someone purporting to be from the DEA, please do not provide any personal or provider information. Report the incident to University Police Detective Kristopher Borrasor (Kristopher.Borrasor@utsouthwestern.edu or 214-633-1626), and contact the DEA using this online reporting form. It is important reports be made to all agencies listed.

If you feel your DEA registration number may be compromised, you should review your Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) records. If you discover any fraudulent or suspicious activity, please report it to the University Police and the DEA. If you have shared your number with anyone claiming to be from the DEA, please also review your PMP activity for any suspicious prescriptions, and report that to those listed above.
