Have you experienced a single stroke event?
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas is conducting research to understand the changes that occur to leg muscles during balance recovery in the event of fall in persons who have experienced a stroke; and to see if individuals change their walking balance and balance recovery patterns after spinal cord stimulation through the skin (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, TENS) in persons who have had a stroke.
Participants will undergo different levels of spinal stimulation followed by testing of reflex behaviors, functional movement in response to an induced trip, and adaptation response to flat surface walking and flat or tilted treadmill walking. The time required for participation in this study is three or more months. There will be compensation for each subject who participates in the study. We are seeking individuals, ages 18-80, with a history of a single stroke event and healthy adults, ages 18-80 with the ability to walk as part of daily activities.

Do you have uncontrolled high blood pressure?
The Hypertension Section of the Division of Cardiology at UTSW is conducting research to determine if the use of a minimally-invasive catheter-based procedure that targets the nerves surrounding the renal arteries, can help to bring down the blood pressure in refractory cases of high blood pressure in patients on at least two anti-hypertensive medications.
Study participants will receive care from the study team, including the procedure and follow-up visits. The team is looking for participants between the ages of 18 and 80 years old with high blood pressure above 150/90 mmHg, no history of autoimmune diseases, stroke or heart attack in the last six months, sleep apnea, recurrent kidney stones, and chronic NSAIDs use. The time required for study is six months to four years. Research participants will be compensated.
