Beware! University Police alerted to gift card and IRS scams
University Police are alerting UT Southwestern employees to scams involving gift cards and impersonating of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents.
In the gift card scam, unknown individuals call to solicit payment in the form of gift cards for items such as debt collection, hospital bills, or taxes. If you receive a phone call from someone telling you to make a payment with gift cards, hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission, Texas Attorney General, or relevant gift card support center.
For more information on reporting gift card scams, visit the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information website.
In the IRS scam, scammers may contact individuals by phone, email, postal mail, or text message to solicit payment for an unpaid tax bill. If you are contacted, hang up, do not respond, and report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
