How did the traveler cross the road? Safely! Check out these crosswalk safety tips from University Police
UT Southwestern Medical Center is committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and peaceful campus, which depends on the combined efforts of University Police and everyone who works and studies on campus. Here are a few crosswalk safety tips to help pedestrians stay safe while crossing the street.
Pedestrians
- Use the crosswalk as directed. Always cross at marked crosswalks.
- Stay alert. Never cross into the street until you are given the right of way. Even if there are not any visible cars nearby, a car could quickly approach. Distracted drivers will not notice that they have the right to stop until it’s too late. Be extremely alert when crossing in high traffic areas, such as Forest Park Road and Mockingbird Lane.
- Stash your phone! Never text or play on your phone while walking across the street. Though you technically have the right of way, drivers can be unpredictable.
Bicyclists
- Use marked bike paths or multi-use paths when available.
- Obey traffic signals and laws on roadways.
- Be cautious and use extra caution as you transition between bike paths, roads, and sidewalks.
Drivers
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections.
- Stay alert for bicyclists and pedestrians. Remember to be extremely alert and reduce speed in areas such as Forest Park Road and Mockingbird Lane.
- Stop! Come to a complete stop if pedestrians are crossing or preparing to cross. Never pass another vehicle that has stopped or is slowing down at a crosswalk.
