Keep your family safe with these Halloween safety tips from UTSW PD
Walk safely
- Put electronic devices down, keep your head up, and walk. Do not run across the street.
- Cross the street at corners using traffic signals and crosswalks. Avoid backyards, shortcuts, and alleys.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
- Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Tell children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
- Tie small glow sticks or use reflective tape on your child’s costume, so they are easily seen in the dark. Stop by the University Police Department (BLC.200) for free reflective wrist bands.
Remind your kids
- Never go into strangers' homes or cars.
- If they are not with an adult, stick with their friends.
- Only trick-or-treat at houses with porch lights on.
- Call 911 in case they get lost.
Take extra care
- Do not leave your home unattended.
- Have adults walk the neighborhood to discourage malicious mischief and keep children safe.
- Motorists should drive slowly, yield to young pedestrians, and watch out for trick-or-treaters darting into the street.
- Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
- Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and on curbs.
