Call for abstracts: Celebration of Women in Science and Medicine poster session
The Women in Science and Medicine Advisory Committee (WISMAC) invites you to submit abstracts for the 2019 Celebration of Women in Science and Medicine poster session to be held immediately following the Ida M. Green Visiting Professorship University Lecture by Susan J. Fisher, Ph.D. (UCSF) on Feb. 6, 2019. This celebration seeks to enhance the visibility and recognition of women in science and medicine at UT Southwestern.
Female scientists, clinicians, and educators, including faculty, postdocs, fellows, residents, and students at UT Southwestern are encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster presentation in basic science, clinical/translational, or public health/education research. Only one abstract may be submitted per presenting author and the presenting author must be able to attend the celebration to present her research. Although the presenting author must be female, co-authors/collaborators can be male.
Submission guidelines
Abstracts should be no longer than 400 words, and submitted online. Title, authors' names, and figures are not included in the word count. References should be noted as citations within the text. The abstract submission form supports text only. Do not use bolding, centering, underlines, columns, bullets, or scientific symbols. If using a figure/table, do not paste into text of abstract, but upload as a single image file.
In addition to the abstract, you must enter the following on the electronic form:
- Category of your poster (basic science, clinical/translational, or public health/education research
- Poster title
- Name of each author; indicate presenting author
- Presenting author's contact information (email address)
Abstract format should include:
- Background/rationale
- Objectives/hypothesis
- Methods
- Results/findings
- Conclusions/implications
Evaluation of abstracts will be based on the following:
- Background/rationale
- Clarity of purpose and objectives
- Appropriate methods
- Accurate interpretation of findings, including lessons learned, potential contributions and/or recommendations for practice, education, or research
- Contemporary contribution to body of knowledge, and
- Effective presentation of all of the above components
Abstract submissions are due by Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018. Notifications as to whether the abstract has been accepted for presentation will be sent to the presenting author for each abstract submission.
Presenting authors are required to attend the celebration. Posters should be displayed before the lecture begins at 4 p.m. in order to be available as soon as the lecture ends. Judges will be viewing posters during the session to determine the recipients of three WISMAC travel awards.
Poster guidelines
Posters should be no larger than 42 inches by 36 inches. Each poster will be assigned one half of an 8-foot-by-4-foot, freestanding, two-sided display board. Tacks will be available to affix your poster to the board.
