The awards are presented quarterly throughout the calendar year. The following employees were selected for their outstanding care and service during the first quarter.
Hospitals
Scott Glover
Administrative Assistant, Volunteer Services
When he began volunteering at the former St. Paul University Hospital in June 2009, Mr. Glover had no plans to work at UT Southwestern. But fortunately for Volunteer Services, that’s exactly what happened when the previous Administrative Assistant left just a few months later.
Mr. Glover’s colleagues describe him as a compassionate team player who is always looking for ways to improve UTSW’s volunteer programs. That dedication helped him bring in 80 new volunteers in just three months, with hopes of reaching 500 volunteers within the next year.
Mr. Glover is a two-time Meritorious Service Award winner.
Claudia Engle, RN, CWOCN
Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse, Clements University Hospital
Ms. Engle started the hospital’s first Wound Ostomy Nursing Department Unit-based council, where she serves as Chair and helps to improve the work environment for all UTSW wound ostomy nurses. She has also co-authored four poster presentations.
Ms. Engle teaches staff, patients, and caregivers wound care and ostomy management, and she recently had an abstract accepted to present at the National Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society Conference.
Colleagues appreciate her knowledge, experience, and witty sense of humor, and patients often show their appreciation for Ms. Engle through PACT cards. One patient wrote: “Claudia is spectacular! She provides the best patient care and she listens. Her bedside manner is something every health care professional should strive for.”
Stacey Cutts, RRT, VA-BC
Manager for Respiratory Therapy and Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics, Zale Lipshy University Hospital
Ms. Cutts’ nominator complimented her exemplary leadership and her efforts to improve vascular access at UTSW and across Texas.
After presenting an initiative to the Texas Medical Board, Ms. Cutts dedicated countless hours to establishing the training and mentoring required to create UT Southwestern’s first Respiratory Therapy vascular access team. The respiratory therapists at UTSW are now placing ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs and peripherally inserted central lines.
UTSW’s first respiratory therapist to hold the VA-BC credential, Ms. Cutts serves on the board for STARVAN, the Dallas chapter of the Lone Star Vascular Access Network.
Susan Chacko, RN, B.S.N., PCCN
Rehabilitation Unit, Zale Lipshy University Hospital
As a primary nurse and also as a charge nurse, Ms. Chacko is regularly complimented for the respectful communication and support she provides to her peers. Her nominator wrote: “She communicates clearly and effectively with each individual – especially the patient care technicians – to ensure the team is providing excellent customer care and nursing care.”
As the unit Clinical Ladder champion, Ms. Chacko enthusiastically shares her nursing knowledge with others. She is known for maintaining a positive attitude even in challenging situations. Patients and families often voice their confidence in her nursing care, and she is a frequent PACT card recipient.
Clinics
Grace Gonzales
CSA III, UTSW Medical Center at Park Cities
With a smile on her face and a friendly word, Ms. Gonzales goes above and beyond to offer assistance to patients and co-workers alike. She coordinates Ob/Gyn patients, working efficiently and compassionately to ensure their needs are met. She also works closely with staff members to appropriately schedule patients for labs, sonograms, and any additional testing.
In the words of her nominator: “Grace is the type of employee you would like to clone. She is reliable, accountable, responsible, professional, and personal.”
Ms. Gonzales is quick to help patients with last-minute cancellations and reschedules, and providers and staff routinely go to her for assistance with difficult scheduling.
Rochelle Brozgold Ready, MSSW, LMSW
Social Work Supervisor, Ambulatory Neurosurgery
Mrs. Brozgold Ready is known for her compassion, helpfulness, and endless energy. Patients and employees seek her out to help with problem-solving because of her reputation for good judgment, openness to new ideas, and active listening skills.
She serves as a patient care bridge – starting with the acute care stay through discharge, and then back to the ambulatory setting. “This is a complex task and involves refined skills to communicate our mission and engage staff to deliver care,” her nominator wrote.
“Rochelle serves this role with the passion of the pioneer that she is,” says Dr. Babu Welch, Medical Director of the UT Southwestern Neurosurgery Ambulatory.
