#KNOWYOURPLATE: Parking registration changes are coming fast and furious
Parking Services is revving up big changes to UT Southwestern vehicle registration, switching gears to a completely electronic method of issuing permits. Beginning Sept. 1, parking decals will be in the rear view.
Registration for 2018-2019 opens Monday, July 23, and runs until August 31. Employees and students who wish to park on campus will be able to register their vehicles online. The online tool offers debit, credit, and payroll deduction options to purchase parking permits. New parking rates are effective Sept. 1. All faculty, employees, and students must register by August 31 or their vehicles may be subject to a citation.
When registration is complete, notification will be sent electronically to the account information on file. That’s it! Traditional parking decals will no longer be issued and will be replaced by virtual permits. Each virtual permit is linked to the registrant’s license plate, which is why Parking Services is promoting a #KNOWYOURPLATE communications campaign this year. Vehicle information can be updated on the go as needed, in the event that you’re using a rental car or your vehicle information changes.
To validate parked vehicles, parking staff have acquired license plate recognition (LPR) technology to scan license plates. By employing LPR, the staff will be able to read up to 5,000 license plates per minute. The system will confirm if vehicles are linked to a parking permit. All vehicles that are parked on UTSW property and are not registered will receive a citation.
“We are very excited to move to a system with no decals,” said Tara Andrews, Operations Manager for Auxiliary Services. “Combining this system with license plate recognition technology allows a more convenient process for UTSW employees and the Parking Services department.”
After FY19 registration ends, annual parking registration as we know it will end. In the future, employees and students will simply need to opt out of parking. Those new to campus are still required to register online.
You’ll be able to find more information on the registration page on the Parking Services website or you can email questions to parkingservices@utsouthwestern.edu.
Avoid standing in long lines by registering online:
- Go to the Parking Services website
- Enter your UT Southwestern ID and password (the same credentials used to access your UTSW email account).
- Click on “Get Permits”
If you are unable to register online, you may obtain a parking application from one of the Parking Services locations:
- West Campus: William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (CUH), North Side, 2nd floor, Room 2.554
- South Campus: Visitor Information Center (A) located on the Dr. Donald Seldin Plaza
If you would like to email your application instead of filling it out online, choose either “Faculty” or “Staff” under the “Parking Applications” section of the Parking Services website. Scan the printed application and email it to parkingservices@utsouthwestern.edu. Faxes will not be accepted.
