About the ARC
The animal care program at UT Southwestern is centerally managed by the Animal Resource Center (ARC), and the entire campus is AAALACi accredited. Animal housing and support rooms are located in five buildings on the south campus, seven buildings on the adjacent north campus, and one building on east campus. Animal facilities are available for rodents, large animals, birds, and fish. Rodent facilities include gnotobiotics, microbiological barrier housing, and conventional housing, procedure rooms and surgery suites, and additionally, ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 housing is available for a range of different species. In addition to the animal facilities, core facilities are available for the creation of genetically modified animals, rodent imaging (MRI, CT and PET), rodent focal and whole body irradiation, and rodent behavioral testing.
The ARC supports the institutional animal care and use program. Specifically, the ARC is responsible for:
- Procuring all animals used on campus
- Performing health surveillance of research animals
- Providing veterinary care and husbandry to research animals
- Providing facilities and trained personnel for conducting technical procedures for reseach
- Partnering with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to assure compliance with federal regulations, funding agency policies, and state and local regulations regarding the care and use of animals
- Assisting faculty and students in planning and conducting research and teaching programs that require animals
