Research Programs
UT Southwestern Medical Center is dedicated to supporting medical science education at all levels. Various training programs support the researchers of the future and the teachers of today.
Disease-Oriented Clinical Scholars
The Disease-Oriented Clinical Scholars (DOCS) Program facilitates state-of-the-art-research in clinical departments at UT Southwestern. The distinguishing feature of the DOCS Program is flexibility. There is no predetermined amount or form of support; rather, the department chair requests the support package that is best suited to a particular candidate and is commensurate with the candidate's dedication to research activities.
Endowed Scholars
The Endowed Scholars Program in Medical Science provides generous financial support over four years to newly appointed tenure-track assistant professors at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Funded by private endowment, the Endowed Scholars Program has launched the research careers of more than 100 investigators.
Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UT Southwestern trains the next generation of M.D./Ph.D. physician-scientists who will lead the future of academic medicine. A highly integrated program, a dedicated and collegial faculty, and an unusually intense, hands-on clinical experience await the prepared student.
NIH FIRST
The FIRST program is supporting the hiring of 10 early-stage tenure-track faculty. Join our new NIH Medical District UTSW-UTD FIRST research program to begin your journey as an early career biomedical faculty.
Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP)
The Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) provides highly individualized research training and career development counseling for young post-residency physicians who desire careers as physician scientists. PSTP participants receive mentorship, the opportunity to train in the research laboratories of one of our internationally renowned faculty, and up to three years of salary support.
Quantitative and Physical Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (QP-SURF)
Geared toward undergraduates majoring in mathematics, computer science, physics, or chemistry, QP-SURF is an intensive 10-week summer research training experience that leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in research at the interface of quantitative and basic biomedical sciences.
Science Teacher Access to Resources at Southwestern (STARS)
Since 1991, STARS has been devoted to improving the quality of science education in North Central Texas. The STARS Program has grown to serve more than 10,000 teachers and 50,000 students in 3,000 schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. STARS includes more than 20 separate programs and projects, which are available – free of charge – to teachers and students in the state of Texas.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF)
SURF is an intensive summer research training experience designed for college students who are preparing for careers in biological research. Fellows spend 10 weeks pursuing individual research projects in the laboratories of faculty members in the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
UT Dallas Green Fellows
The Green Fellows Program provides a semester-long intensive research training experience for undergraduates at UT Dallas that will lead to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in addressing basic research problems in the biological sciences. Green Fellows pursue individual research projects under the direction of the faculty at UT Southwestern's Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences.
