History of the Prize
Following the death of Dr. Levine in June 2020, there was a universal sense among her peers and colleagues that her academic legacy should be honored. UT Southwestern Medical Center decided to establish an international prize in her honor, recognizing that very few U.S. medical schools act as the sponsoring organization for prizes in any field of medicine.
Fundraising for the prize reached its designated goal in 2022 with the strong support of Dr. Levine’s husband and children. While the goal was achieved, these efforts are ongoing.
The Beth Levine, M.D. Prize in Autophagy Research will be awarded annually in perpetuity under the aegis of a steering committee and a selection committee, which will include leading investigators at and outside of UT Southwestern.
The first recipient of the prize was announced in June 2023. The formal award ceremony will be scheduled in fall 2023.
