Faculty Committees

Faculty Senate

This is the representative body for the faculty at UT Southwestern consisting of one elected member from each of the Medical School departments and one member each from the School of Health Professions and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Faculty Senate provides a forum for the faculty to conceive, review, and recommend policies affecting UT Southwestern. The Senate communicates faculty concerns to the administration and keeps the faculty informed on important policies and issues. In addition, the Senate hosts the Faculty Assembly each May, featuring top administrators who provide campus updates and respond to issues raised by faculty members.

Faculty Assembly of Southwestern School of Health Professions

This body consists of all members of the faculty. Officers are elected to serve on the assembly’s executive council, which meets monthly and serves in an advisory capacity to the Dean in matters that affect the faculty. Full assembly meetings are held each Spring and Fall.

Faculty Councils

The Southwestern Medical School Faculty Council is composed of all department chairs and deans, including associate deans who are specifically designated, plus two members elected by the Faculty Senate. This council is the official advisory body to the provost regarding academic affairs.

The Faculty Council of the School of Health Professions consists of department chairs, academic program directors, the elected president of the Faculty Assembly, and the Assistant/Associate Dean(s).

Faculty Advisory Council

The Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) is a UT System committee comprised of faculty members representing component institutions. The purpose of the committee is to facilitate the flow of ideas and information between and among the Board of Regents, the System administration, and the component institutions. There are usually four meetings per academic year in Austin. UT Southwestern has one representative from the Medical School and one representative from the School of Health Professions, plus an alternate.

Get to Know Your Colleagues

UT Southwestern is known for highly productive and rewarding collaborations. For the purpose of attracting trainees and collaborations, new tenure-accruing Assistant Professors are introduced to the UT Southwestern community at the annual New Faculty Research Forum. A useful tool for learning the wealth of expertise among your colleagues is the Faculty Finder, through which you can search for colleagues by name or by research area.

You are strongly encouraged to post your profile in the Faculty Information System upon arrival at UT Southwestern and to keep it updated either on your own or by assigning access to an assistant. Information in your profile will be searchable by research interests and will help attract trainees to your research group.

Organization of the Medical Center

Part of The University of Texas System, UT Southwestern is governed by the UT Board of Regents. President Daniel K. Podolsky leads the medical center, which includes three degree-granting institutions. The three schools train more than 4,400 medical, graduate, and health professions students, residents, and postdoctoral scholars each year. Faculty are appointed to the School of Health Professions or the Medical School; faculty are also non-divisional members of the Graduate School, but to mentor graduate students, faculty members must join a graduate school program.

Six-Year Plan

UT Southwestern’s Six-Year Plan is a rolling strategic plan updated every two years by committees appointed by the President. The committees, comprised mostly of faculty, help the institution prioritize its needs and suggest where to use resources. Six-Year Plans are available in the Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center.
