Worker Protection Program
The Worker Protection Program (WPP) is a program administered by Occupational Health Services designed to promote a safe work environment by minimizing the risk of illness or injury associated with working with or around research animals. The program includes an initial enrollment and general education of all personnel working with or exposed to laboratory animals, a health history screening, routine and special immunizations, medical care, workforce health surveillance, annual respirator evaluation and fit testing, and wellness promotion.
How Does It Work?
You need to be enrolled to have access to the animal facilities and the ability to work with research animals (e.g., being listed on an IACUC protocol). All enrollment information will be evaluated by the Occupational Health Clinic. The Clinic is also available for any questions regarding occupational hazards when working with research animals.
Who Must Enroll?
Anyone needing access to an animal facility and/or working with animals (listed on an IACUC protocol) must enroll. Individuals with exposure to research animal work areas must also enroll. You cannot decline enrollment but you may elect to decline to be seen by a medical professional associated with the WPP program and elect to utilize your personal medical professional instead.
How to Enroll
To enroll, simply complete and submit the Health History Questionnaire (VPN Required). Your health information will be reviewed by the Occupational Health Clinic, who will screen your responses to identify any risks you need to be aware of and to advise you about required training, available precautions, and work restrictions (if applicable). The questionnaire needs to be completed at least annually. A reminder will be sent by email to each participant when it is time to update.
What Are the Consequences of Not Enrolling?
Your access to the animal facilities and/or the ability to work with animals may be withheld or discontinued if enrollment is not current.
