Wrong number

hand touches lit cellphone screen against dark background

“Wrong number” text scammers send out a huge number of texts hoping to start a conversation with a potential victim. The message seems important but was sent to you by mistake. If the recipient responds, the scammer will attempt to establish a relationship. Multiple messages may be exchanged with photos, compliments, or fake insider financial tips to gain trust and scam their victim. The text exchange may be with a chatbot program that simulates human conversation rather than a person.

  • Resist the urge to respond to a “wrong number”
  • Do not engage or provide any information
  • Do not follow any instructions
  • Block the number if you receive multiple texts
