Fake Error Messages

digital error message

Cybercriminals create fake error messages to lure users into installing malware while web browsing or opening a document. The errors may use convincing branding and content. Since the messages appear legitimate and offer a way to fix a problem, the user may be inclined to follow the directions.

  • Be skeptical of instructions from a pop-up window or error message when browsing the internet
  • Be cautious of opening or downloading attachments
  • Be particularly suspicious if instructed to open the PowerShell application or the command line
  • Type the words from the error message into a search engine to check for error pop-up scams
  • If you have questions about an error message, contact the servicedesk@utsouthwestern.edu
