Maybe you’ll break the internet – just don’t let it break your security

We might be gradually making our way back to an in-person world, but online browsing and social media are still defining the way we communicate. Next time you go to an actual restaurant (only to stare at your phone, let’s be real) and hop on the eateries’ Wi-Fi, remember these ways to keep your information safe online:

  • Consider any private information you disclose online to be permanently shared.
  • Make sure you’re running the latest version of anti-virus software, operating systems, and browsers for better protection.
  • Browser extensions are small programs with high access to your web browser. Ask yourself if they’re worth the risk before adding them in.
  • Free public Wi-Fi may allow a third party to steal your information. Use VPN to connect for better security.
  • Set a strong, unique password for each of your accounts. Do not use your UTSW password on any other websites or services.
  • Information from social media accounts is regularly used to perpetrate scams and fraud, so check your privacy settings often.
