Professional Standards and Performance Committee
The Professional Standards and Performance Committee was created to focus attention on medical professionalism within our community, both on the individual level and on the collective behavior of our faculty. Its ultimate goals are to promote excellence in the clinical care of our patients and to encourage provider behaviors that will improve the quality of our service and the patient experience.
The principles of professionalism at UT Southwestern Medical Center include altruism, respect, accountability, and excellence.
- The patient’s best interests always come first.
- A patient of a colleague in the UT Southwestern Health System is also my patient.
- We will work as a team to optimize and coordinate care of patients, recognizing that this requires clear communication and respect for each other’s roles.
- All members of the UT Southwestern Faculty Practice are committed to self-improvement and will be examples and leaders for all other members of the health care team.
Physician behaviors are evaluated in the context of how they exemplify the principles. Timeliness in attending to patient needs and requests, good communication with patients and families as well as other members of the care team, and adherence to clinical care pathways are examples of how the principles are incorporated into patient care.
Communication is a foundation of medical professionalism. The committee believes that faculty to faculty communication regarding consultations is an important step in improving the quality of care we can provide to our patients.
