Alex Kim, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Surgery
Dr. Kim earned his medical degree and a doctoral degree in cellular and molecular biology at the University of Michigan. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Michigan Health System and received advanced training through a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.
Dr. Kim specializes in a complex procedure known as cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), which involves resection of any abdominal organs containing cancer and infusing the belly cavity with a heated chemotherapy bath. He is also active in clinical research and runs a basic and translational research lab focused on understanding the mechanisms of colon cancer metastasis to the abdominal cavity.

Sanjay Chandrasekaran, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Internal Medicine – Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Chandrasekaran earned his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He completed joint residency and advanced fellowship training in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology through the physician-scientist pathway at Emory University and its Winship Cancer Institute.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Chandrasekaran joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021.
He has published numerous academic articles, delivered multiple presentations, and served as a grant reviewer for the When Everyone Survives Leukemia Research Foundation.
During fellowship training, Dr. Chandrasekaran received a Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Merit Award and was the recipient of the 2020 Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ECOG-ACRIN) Cancer Research Group’s Paul Carbone, MD Fellowship Award.
Yazan Madanat, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Internal Medicine – Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Madanat earned his medical degree at the University of Jordan. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and then received advanced training in hematology and medical oncology through a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern leukemia and hematopoietic cell transplant program in the Division of Hematology and Oncology in 2019.
Dr. Madanat is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American College of Physicians. He earned Abstract Achievement Awards from the American Society of Hematology for two consecutive years (2017 and 2018) and received an honorable distinction award from the Society of Hematologic Oncology in 2018.

Qian Qin, M.D.
Assistant Professor

Dr. Qin earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital and gained advanced training through a hematology and medical oncology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Certified by the Board of Internal Medicine, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021.
Her research interests are in treatment of GU cancer patients and to establish biomarker-driven, tailored plans for kidney cancer patients through novel radiotracer and imaging approaches.
Patricio Polanco, M.D.
Associate Professor
Department of Surgery
A native of Peru, Dr. Polanco graduated as valedictorian of Universidad de San Martin de Porres Medical School. After completing his surgical training in Lima, Peru, he moved to the United States, where he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship and a general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. During his training, Dr. Polanco received several prestigious accolades, including the Alpha Omega Alpha-Honor Medical Society, the Charles C. Moore Teaching Award at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. He later pursued a Complex Surgical Oncology Fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
A board-certified surgeon by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Polanco joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2014.
His research focuses on gastrointestinal cancers and has advanced training in minimally invasive techniques, robotic surgery, cytoreductive surgery, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
2019
Andrew Day, M.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Otolaryngology
Dr. Day earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Following his residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine, he received advanced training in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
His clinical interests primarily include the management of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. He has specific expertise in complex ablative surgery, transoral laser microsurgery (TLM), transoral robotic surgery (TORS), reconstructive surgery, skin cancer and melanoma management, sentinel lymph node biopsy, open and minimally-invasive salivary gland surgery, and thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Syed Kazmi, M.D.
Associate Professor

Dr. Kazmi completed medical training at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan where he graduated as the best graduate of his class. He then pursued a Master of Research degree at University of Glasgow, UK, in Biological and Biomedical Sciences and graduated with honors. He completed his internal medicine residency training at UT Health Science Center at Houston followed by a three-year Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was named chief fellow for Hematology and was recipient of Young Investigator Award from ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation.
His clinical practice at UTSW focuses on gastrointestinal malignancies and his research is geared towards colorectal cancer research. He is interested in all aspects of clinical research including patient centered outcome research, quality assessment and designing interventions to improve delivery of cancer-care to underserved populations. At UTSW he wants to utilize the strength of its basic science faculty to find novel therapies for colorectal cancer patients.

Basak Dogan, M.D., FSBI
Professor
Department of Radiology
Dr. Dogan earned her medical degree at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, and completed her residency training in diagnostic radiology at Ankara University Medical School. She received advanced training in breast imaging through a fellowship program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Prior to joining the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016, she was an associate professor at MD Anderson, where she also served as Medical Director of the MD Anderson Ben and Julie Rogers Main Campus Breast Diagnostic Clinic.
Her research interests include advanced breast magnetic resonance imaging applications, optoacoustic imaging, and microbubble contrast-enhanced ultrasound of sentinel lymph nodes. She has authored or co-authored more than 67 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters and is frequently an invited speaker at many national and international conferences.

Hans Hammers, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Hammers received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Medical University of Luebeck in Germany. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and performed his fellowship in medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Hammers joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016. He is co-leader of clinical research and immunotherapy for the kidney cancer research program and will be continuing his research efforts to develop novel immunotherapies for kidney cancer.
