The American College of Surgeons has announced that Assistant Professor Dr. Sam Wang will receive the 2019 Jacobson Promising Investigator Award. Dr. Wang is the first person at UT Southwestern to be so honored.

The award was established in 2004 by Joan L. and Dr. Julius H. Jacobson to recognize outstanding surgeons whose work promises to advance surgical knowledge, practice, and safety.

The recipient of the award, Dr. Wang, is an assistant professor within the Department of Surgery and serves in its division of surgical oncology. His research focuses on gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreas cancer. In 2018, he received a Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute for work related to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. More recently, he has been investigating the genetic basis for increased rates of gastric cancer in Hispanic/Latino patients.

The award will be given to Dr. Wang in person at a ceremony and luncheon during the American College of Surgeons’ 2019 Clinical Congress.
