Melissa Kirkwood, M.D.

Melissa Kirkwood, M.D., has been named chief of the division of vascular surgery, making her the first female division chief in the department.

An international expert in radiation safety, Dr. Kirkwood has given over 20 international and national plenary talks and 52 regional presentations, and has written 20 first-author, peer-reviewed publications as well as 10 book chapters and 9 invited commentaries in Vascular Specialist. She has been selected by the Joint Commission to develop national radiation safety guidelines.

Dr. Kirkwood also received the S. Timothy String Award from the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery for best manuscript (2015) and the Society for Vascular Surgery’s Women’s Leadership Award (2016).
