The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that John Mansour, M.D., has been appointed to the position of vice chair of quality in our department and that his role as chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology will be assumed by Adam Yopp, M.D.

Dr. Mansour joined the Department of Surgery in 2007 and has served as chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology since 2014. He also leads the gastrointestinal cancer disease-oriented team at the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2019, he was appointed to serve as a director on the American Board of Surgery’s complex general surgical oncology board. He is a member of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Association for Academic Surgery. His clinical expertise has been recognized by his receiving the Patricia and William L. Watson, Jr., M.D., Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine at UT Southwestern as well as his inclusion in D Magazine's Best Doctors list for over 10 years running.

In this new position, Dr. Mansour will oversee the department’s involvement in national, institutional, and local quality projects. This will involve cooperation with colleagues both within the department and throughout UT Southwestern.

“One of the most exciting aspects of this new position will be the opportunity to collaborate with my partners across the institution,” says Dr. Mansour. “I hope we can develop a robust program of quality improvement which translates to improved patient outcomes, increased institutional reputation, important academic contributions, and an environment of transparent communication between all the stakeholders in our communal clinical effort.”

Stepping into Dr. Mansour’s former role as chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology is Associate Professor Adam Yopp, M.D. Dr. Yopp joined the Department of Surgery in 2009 and is the surgical director of the liver tumor program at UT Southwestern, as well as the director of the tissue specimen resource at the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Yopp is a master liver surgeon with experience in open, minimally invasive, and regional surgery approaches to patients with liver cancer. He is widely published and an R01-funded investigator in the area of cancer health care disparities. Dr. Yopp holds the Occidental Chemical Chair in Cancer Research.

“I am extremely excited about these changes for both Dr. Mansour and Yopp,” says Herbert J. Zeh, III, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery. “I have great confidence that they are both well-suited and prepared for the challenges of these new roles. The department is very fortunate to be able to leverage their energy, experience, and enthusiasm as we continue to grow and mature as a community.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mansour and Dr. Yopp on their new roles in the department.
