Fellowship

UT Southwestern Medical Center & Children’s Health System of Texas

The Division of Pediatric Surgery and the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern, in association with the Children’s Health System of Texas has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to launch a one-year Pediatric Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Fellowship Purpose

The Pediatric Surgical Critical Care fellowship aims to:

  • Provide specialized pediatric surgical critical care training.
  • To Offer advanced post-surgical training in trauma surgery and surgical critical care.
  • To satisfy the American Board of Surgery (ABS) requirements for obtaining certification of added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.

Program Overview

Fellows will train at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital under the direct supervision of faculty across all intensive care units. This program is designed for surgical residents interested in managing critical care issues affecting pediatric patients, from the newborn period through early adulthood.

During the fellowship, trainees will rotate through Pediatric Surgery, NICU, PICU, Burns, and Adult SICU, gaining experience with a diverse range of pediatric pathologies, including congenital conditions, trauma, and complex surgical cases. Fellows will also have opportunities to engage in research and academic pursuits.

Research Activity

While research participation is encouraged, it is not mandatory. Fellows will have access to a monthly research conference for each service and will be sponsored to attend one national meeting per training year.

Didactics & Curriculum

The fellow will participate in the lecture series for each rotation so that they are exposed to a broad based of knowledge.  In addition, as they will qualify for the surgical critical care boards through the American Board of Surgery (https://www.absurgery.org/get-certified/surgical-critical-care/) we will ensure readiness for the exam. We use the Scientific American surgical critical care curriculum.  The fellow will participate in the lecture series provided by faculty and other fellows.
